A typography based piece in tribute to one of my favorite shows on television, the critically acclaimed "Breaking Bad." I wanted to illustrate the corruption of Walter White as he completes the transformation into Heisenberg over the course of the series with the treatment and effects on the type.
Essentially I wanted to show the concept of "Purity" in the terms of a triad of the things that transform through the episodes, whether it is the growing or receding cancer, the quantity and quality of the meth, or the moral compass of the protagonist, Walter. The hints of blue cracked glass represent the meth, while the intricate patterns within the lettering represent the intellect of Walter. In contrast, the destroyed and distorted effects around the typography represent the cancer.
Walter White begins the series as a simple Chemistry Teacher, and evolves into the drug kingpin Heisenberg who runs an empire worth billions (with a b).
Perhaps the most apt quote to describe the thought process behind this piece can be found in the series is the one Walt tells the children on the first day of Chemistry class;
"As many of you know, I have a background as a chemistry teacher. I've come to realize that much of what I teach my students applies not only to what goes on in the classroom, but in life also. It's not as crazy as it sounds. You see, technically, chemistry is the study of matter, but I prefer to see it as the study of change: Electrons change their energy levels. Molecules change their bonds. Elements combine and change into compounds. But that's all of life, right? It's the constant, it's the cycle. It's solution, dissolution. Just over and over and over. It is growth, then decay, then transformation. It's fascinating really. It's a shame so many of us never take time to consider its implications" - Walter
